Growing up, I always heard, “Remember the Golden Rule” and “Treat others the way that you want to be treated.”
These ideas certainly seem well intentioned, though there is a problem the Golden Rule.
Most people do not want to be treated the way that YOU want to be treated… they want to be treated the way that THEY want to be treated!
Instead of using the Golden Rule (which I am campaigning to eliminate), use instead the Platinum Rule (from Dr. Tony Alessandra):
Treat others the way that THEY want to be treated.
I wanted to share a couple examples that you may have seen in your life.
The Best Way to Communicate
Nowadays, it is easier and easier to keep in touch with the people in your network.
You have phone, email, text, social media posts & messages, snail mail and smoke signal.
Which is your preferred method of communication?
Do you have a one or two that you prefer, and a couple you do not?
Think, then, about people in your life.
Are there some people that will only respond via text? The voice message on their phone could even include “please email or text me for quicker response”.
If you treat people the way THEY want to be treated and communicate with them in their preferred method, then you are much more likely to have a quick (and pleasant) response!
If you think about traveling, are you the planner who knows how each minute will spent, where you will go, and perhaps even purchase your tickets in advance? Or do you pick a place to go, and just see what happens when you get there?
Your behavioral style impacts how you travel… and knowing how the people in your life prefer to travel will give you the opportunity to make it a better experience for everyone.
For example, when I am traveling, I do want a schedule, or tasks we are going to do. To simply sit around and do nothing can drive me nuts UNLESS I know that the plan is we are just going to relax for a few hours. For me, knowing the task is to relax and kick back is enough for me to be able to enjoy doing just that.
By treating others the way that they want to be treated, , life will be better for all!
