Welcome back to our series of the 10 Commandments of Networking a Mixer. Visit our previous blog if you missed the 1st Commandment.
Commandment #2: Set a Goal for the Number and Type of People You Want to Meet
When I ask people about goals when networking, the responses I most often hear include “How long do I have to stay?”, “Where is the food?” and “Where is the bar?”.
What if, instead, we went into the event with the INTENTION of how many people and the type of people we want to meet, and only leave once we accomplish that goal.
What kind of goals might you have when you are networking?
- Meeting new people & scheduling meetings. People you are meeting at the networking event fall into three categories: potential referral sources, prospects, and others. When you are networking, you are going to want to concentrate on potential Referral Sources and Prospects.
Your goal: Book a meeting from the meeting!
- Inviting people to other events.
- Connecting and reconnecting with people you already know (possibly scheduling meetings)
Be proactive in quickly reach your goal of meeting new people, perhaps by connecting with the host of the event and the person working the door, to ask if they know any of the type of people you are looking to meeting. Some events even have guest list that can be seen online so you know who will be at the event before it starts.
Set your goals, work the room and generate the success you were looking for!
What will be your next networking goal???
