Last year, I decided it was time to get in shape… and it was not an easy task, nor one that I have completed. I still have a few pounds left to go, but I am happy to say that I have maintained my current weight for a year. Soon, I will begin that journey to shed the last 10 pounds.
In the meantime, I thought I would share a few tips on how I have been successful, as I know many of you are as busy as me, or busier, and we often have a hard time making it to the gym.
A few of these ideas are ones I have come up with to help me out, others were shared with me by Marja Blitz from Rock Bottom Fitness, who has helped me out quite a bit!

Always have a healthy snack: When I leave the house for the day, I try to pack some healthy snack food with me. Veggies are best, I know, but on the days when I forget my cooler, what to do? I usually have some nuts and a package of tuna in the car, just in case. (And I do recommend a plastic fork as well, eating tuna without one is not easy)
Push ups are a girl’s best friend (or guy): Apparently pushups work many muscles in the body, including your core, and are a great exercise. They can be done on the floor, as well as up against the wall, desk, or kitchen cabinet, which is my new favorite place to do pushups. Why? When I have something in the microwave, I do pushups till the food is ready (as long as it’s a reheat and not actually cooking), this gets my body a little extra exercise each time I go to eat (Ironic, isn’t it).
Nutrition is 80%, exercise is 20%: Veggies make it all better, and the more vegetables that you eat, the better your body does. I am not great at eating vegetables all the time, but the more you can get in, the healthier you will be! Try to pack extra for snacks during the day… I recently discovered a chip maker by Pampered Chef. Cut up the fruits or veggies, pop them in the microwave, and then you have natural chips. Zucchini is a great healthy snack, but it also makes really good potato and sweet potato chips – which are not as healthy as veggies, but better than store bought chips. (click to find out more about this cool kitchen tool I got from Stacey Janoske of Pampered Chef)

These are my top 3 tips, inspired by Marja (even though not in her words) on how to stay healthy, even when on the go!

Hi Tiffanie! Thanks for the tips. I am also at the same point in my journey to a healthier me. I have the last 10 pounds to lose and am looking for some new tricks. I am definitely going to try the veggie chip idea. Quick, easy, and healthy especially on a busy schedule. Thank you so much for sharing!

Push-ups are great. About 4 wks ago I set out on a project- to get to 10 push-ups. (Men’s). Then when I did, I stopped. Your blog has inspired me to start again.

For me, exercise, sleep and nutrition are all connected. When I do poorly in one area, I tend to do poorly in others. Having a few days free of alcohol (even just a glass of wine) seems to help. Also, find an activity you enjoy and stick with it. For me, it’s swimming, although I throw in some other stuff too so my body doesn’t get too used to just swimming.

I not only bring healthy snacks, but try to bring my own lunch/dinner whenever possible. The less I eat of processed/fatty/prepared foods, the better, I try to eat organic/whole grain whenever possible, take vitamins, etc. For me, it’s all connected. Lastly, I stay hydrated. I always bring water with me wherever I go. For long days, I bring a thermos that has a water filter built in.

Fantastic tips Tiffanie. It’s amazing what a difference a little bit of planning ahead can make.

Keeping healthy snacks on hand is critical. I am on the road all day and it is tempting to stop for fast food when I get hungry, unless I have snacks with me. You have inspired me to pack more veggies! Thanks Tiffanie!

    Thanks for sharing your tips.
Congrats on your success in regards to your weight goals!

Eating vegetables and drinking tons of water are two main focuses of mine. Exercising is sporadic, but completing P90x is a goal of mine in 2012…who wants to do it with me?
